  28. Welcome to rec.music.info, a Usenet newsgroup that aims at being a low
  29. volume, high quality source of music-related information.

  31. You are now reading the first of two introductory articles about
  32. rec.music.info. This particular article explains what rec.music.info is,
  33. and answers some Frequently Asked Questions. The second article is titled
  34. "Submission Guidelines", and you only need to read it if you want to submit
  35. something to the newsgroup yourself.

  37. By the way: many Usenet informational articles (or FAQs), including this
  38. one, are available for anonymous ftp from the archive site rtfm.mit.edu in
  39. the directory pub/usenet/news.answers. The name under which a FAQ is
  40. archived appears is the one that appears in the 'Archive-name' line at the
  41. top of the article. The FAQ you are now reading is, for instance, archived
  42. as music/rec-music-info/welcome.

  45. mail server. Just send an e-mail message to mail-server@rtfm.mit.edu

  51. The purpose or charter of r.m.info is to provide the Internet community
  52. with a resource for information, news, and facts about any and all things
  53. musical.

  55. Whereas all the other musical newsgroups on the net are intended for
  56. unmoderated discussions and general chit-chat about their specific musical
  57. topics, rec.music.info contains only informational, factual articles.
  58. Followups are redirected to an appropriate unmoderated group, and further
  59. discussion (if any) will not take place in r.m.info.

  61. In order to ensure that r.m.info contains only appropriate articles, it was
  62. decided to create the group as a moderated newsgroup.

  65.  --- Eh, what is a 'followup', and what does 'moderated' mean?

  67. If you are new to Usenet and not familiar with the terminology, you might
  68. want to read the general introductory articles found in the newsgroup
  69. news.announce.newusers. Doing so will make your life on the net much
  70. easier, and will probably save you from making silly beginner's mistakes.

  72. If you think that at this moment you are reading an echo, a conference, or
  73. a bboard, I'd also strongly suggest a trip over to news.announce.newusers.

  75. For the rest of this article, I will assume you have a basic knowledge of
  76. Usenet and Internet terminology and mechanics.

  79.  --- OK, so now I know what 'moderated' means. Tell me more.

  81. Rec.music.info is a moderated newsgroup, which means that all articles
  82. submitted to the group will have to be approved by the moderator first.

  84. The current moderator of the group (as well as author of this article) is
  85. Leo Breebaart. Submissions to r.m.info as well as comments, criticisms,
  86. suggestions or questions about the group can either be directly posted to
  87. rec.music.info, or e-mailed to:

  94. The influence of the moderator is minimal and of an administrative nature,
  95. consisting chiefly of weeding out inappropriate articles, while making sure
  96. correct headers etc. are used for the appropriate ones.

  99.  --- Why does every article subject start with a capitalized word?
  100.  
  101. The subject of every article posted to r.m.info starts with a special
  102. keyword. This enables people to automatically select or kill entire
  103. categories of information that they are/are not interested in. Because of
  104. the keyword scheme we do not need separate newsgroups for e.g. chart
  105. listings, or for concert dates, or for discographies.

  108.  --- What are the keywords, and what do they mean?
  109.  
  110. At the moment there are 9 broad categories of rec.music.info articles.
  111.  
  112. ADMIN: Words of wisdom from the moderator. Used for newsgroup-related
  113. information and administratrivia only. For messages that get crossposted to
  114. other groups (like the one you are reading right now), I will use the less
  115. confusing REC.MUSIC.INFO: keyword.

  117. CHART: 'Top <n>' lists of songs and albums from all over the world, usually
  118. posted periodically. Considered worthless trivia by many people, charts are
  119. nonetheless hugely popular with even more people, so they make up a
  120. non-trivial amount of r.m.info contents.

  122. DISCOGRAPHY: Discographies for recording artists in any genre.
  123.  
  124. CONCERT: Tour schedules, special appearances, festival line-ups, this
  125. season's list of Boston Philharmonic performances -- you get the picture.

  127. RELEASE: Announcements concering new music releases: singles, albums,
  128. video's, etc.

  130. NEWS: "Freddie Mercury, the lead singer of Queen, died this weekend."
  131.  
  132. MAILINGLIST: Announcements and information pertaining to any of the
  133. existing musical mailing lists.

  135. FAQ: Frequently Asked Questions articles.

  137. INFO: Catch-all category for information that is useful but does not fit
  138. any of the above categories. Examples: "List of good classical record shops
  139. in Amsterdam", "Ftp site for Michael Jackson-related material established".

  141. Some articles can also have a 'secondary keyword' attached in [square
  142. brackets] at the end of the Subject line. CONCERT articles, for instance,
  143. usually include the geographical location in that manner.

  157. Effectively this means that anything you post to rec.music.info will be
  158. permanently stored, so your work will not be lost.
